This page summarizes the current child care and educational opportunities available at the Cathedral. If you have questions or need additional information about any of the educational opportunities described in this brochure, please contact the person listed under a particular heading or, if no one is listed, please contact the office (410-467-3750).

For Children:

Nursery
The nursery is available for our youngest children and is staffed from 8:45 to 11:45 on Sunday mornings during the school year and from 10:00 to 11:45 on Sunday mornings during the summer. Babies and toddlers are always welcome in church too; the soft space at the back of the church is there for you and them. When they become restless, we ask that they be taken to the nursery or the Undercroft until they are ready to rejoin the rest of the congregation.

Sunday School
Sunday School programs are held for children starting at two years and continuing through sixth grade. Two-year old children are part of a cooperative class which is taught by a paid instructor with alternating parent volunteers. Children ages three through fourth grade are taught using the Godly Play curriculum. Grades 5 and 6 will continue to be exposed to Godly Play but will experience other teaching methods as well. To be eligible for the three-year old program, children should be turning three by the end of October. All of the Sunday School classes begin at 10:15 and continue until the Presentation Hymn during the 10:30 worship service, at which time children join families for Holy Communion.

For Youth:

Journey to Adulthood
Beginning in seventh grade this year, youth are enrolled in a three-part program. The first segment is called Rite 13. Rite 13 includes all seventh and eighth graders and culminates in a special Rite 13 Celebration which is held for each youth as he or she turns 13. The second segment, which includes ninth and tenth graders, is called J2A. And the third segment, for eleventh and twelfth graders, is Young Adults in the Church (YAC). These three groups meet from 9:00 to 10:00 on Sunday mornings and also participate in extra-curricular activities and events such as the Crop Walk, bowling, skating and lock-ins. For the last several years, the Rite 13 group has taken a trip to a Heifer International farm in Massachusetts, and the J2A and YAC groups have gone on pilgrimages and mission trips to places such as Honduras, Canterbury Cathedral in England, the Taizé community in France, Appalachia, Navajoland in Arizona, the Iona community in Scotland, and Nova Scotia.

For Adults:

Adult Formation
Several classes are available for adults. Each Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., there is an adult Bible study which focuses on the morning lessons. Adults are also invited to attend the Adult Forum which is offered from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The Forum offers a wide variety of classes which are described in more detail in an Adult Formation Class List which is available at the Cathedral. There are several weekday and Saturday opportunities also available--these offerings are also described in the Adult Formation Class List. For more information you can also contact the office (410-467-3750).

Teaching/ Leading Children and Youth
All of our Sunday school teachers and youth leaders are volunteers. Sunday school teachers are asked to work with children on Sunday mornings and to be available for planning meetings and training sessions at various times during the year. Youth leaders are asked to work with youth on Sunday mornings, to help plan and attend extra-curricular activities, and to attend planning and training meetings throughout the year. All volunteers are encouraged and youth leaders are required to complete Mending Creation, a Diocesan "safe church" training program designed to compel adult leaders to consider issues of emotional and physical safety for children in their charge, and to be able to conciously create a sacred space where healthy behaviors are practiced between adults and children. Volunteers need to demonstrate a love for and desire to work with children and/or youth. Training is provided. If you are interested in teaching Sunday school or working with youth, please contact the office (410-467-3750).
